redundancy and ridiculousness

so sometimes i hate grammar. i shouldn't say that because i'm a copy editor. but i don't think the editor-in-chief is following this.....jaclyn?? are you out there?

there is this booklet/compilation of shiz that my professor put together. here are a few things that are incorrectly used by almost 100% of the population. (ok, i made that up, but they're pretty wild.):

  1. anxious and eager are not interchangeable. anxious means something with fear. eager means excited, not fearful.
  2. the correct phrase is "chAmping at the bit" not "chOmping."
  3. eyewitness is a redundant reference. this is so because you never say "there were earwitnesses" or "nosewitnesses." witnesses are always witnesses because of their eyes.
  4. "maximum capacity" is redundant. capacity means being fulled to the maximum amount.
  5. and my favorite....you're never supposed to use "over" unless referring to something spacial. there are more than 4,000 people in the room, not over.

ridiculous right? if i said to someone, "hey i'm so anxious to get my paycheck. i have been chomping at the bit for weeks. there are over 50 employees who get paid today"....i think they would understand. please, fellow readers, let me know if you would not understand that and would question my intelligence if i said that.

in other news, i want a cheeseburger. i haven't had a cheesburger and fries and a soda in....ages. i think my bowel system would be effed up for weeks if i gave in to that urge.

until next time...
